Undoubtedly one of the freshest days of the year, immediately following new years and in certain circles the NBA Draft lol. I’m about to go country (shout to lil Nas X – Old Town Road Remix) just go with me!
What do you wear when you want to get all gussied up and make even the Pastor pause from the pulpit? In the South, its a Searsucker Suit.
Quick History Lesson:
The word seersucker is actually a derivative of a Hindi word “sīrsakar” that had itself been borrowed from the Persian compound “shīroshakar” which means milk and sugar. This fabric has always been a mainstay in gentleman’s wardrobe as it was originally developed in Great Britain as was worn in the British India colonies where the temps were exceptionally humid and
hot during their summer months. One of the reasons it became so popular in the US south is because of its light airy texture and a lot of its resurgence can be attributes to a Master Clothier out of New Orleans, circa 1909, Mr. Joseph Haspel, Sr. As an additional aside, Seersucker was used for summer service uniforms of the first female United States Marines, so that said Semper Fi in style.
I love the fabric for many of the reasons that gentleman fell in love with it over a century ago. What really sets it apart today is that it has become a signal of southern elegance. There are few other parts of the country where you will see someone confidently and comfortable in a seesucker suit.
This look is sponsored by K&G Fashion Superstores from head to toe. The suit is a Ralph Lauren Ultraflex which is built for comfort and speed. It’s like the porsche of mid major suit designs. A simple pairing goes a long way, so of course I chose a white shirt. If you haven’t noticed by now its statement pieces with simple pairings all the way for me. If you want to jazz this look up, and you can bear the heat, i think a chambray shirt would pair nicely with the sear sucker (look coming soon on my IG @thewkender_). The shoes are Moretti super comfortable blue woven loafers which create the pop of color needed to liven the look up. This is a great choice for easter and you can go grab it, in its entirety, at your local K&G for under $300.
If anyone is as excited about easter looks as I am feel free to shoot me a photo and your handle, I’ll be sure to post it to my IG.
