The Turtleneck is a timeless staple in my wardrobe TODAY, but getting to this point has not come without its struggles.
I want to take you back to 1994. High right/Low left asymmetrical haircuts were in and Boyz II Men was seated at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 to end the year. Overall, this was a good year, Except… One… Thing…
This was the year that I was introduced to turtlenecks, AND I HATED EVERY BIT OF IT!!!!! I literally felt like i was suffocating. It was itchy, and my mom always wanted to put them on me when something important was happening. I was immediately incentivized to act up, literally saying get this thing off of me!
I built an utter disdain for an article of clothing; also, it didn’t help that as I matriculated through school everyone’s clothes were 4 sizes too big. So this very quickly translated to me archiving my turtlenecks to never be seen again.
However, what I’ve noticed is that your taste in fashion, much life all other things in life, evolves as you age.
Turtlenecks are an easy win. They dress up or down and they are perfect for colder weather. In this instance, I tried to strike a balance between casual and upscale for an everyday look.
The Outfit:
I love blue and black together. The royal blue tweed suit, complete with elbow patches, is a winter ensemble. It’s heavy enough to beat cooler temperatures on its own, and if a freeze warning is eminent, then a simple top layer will likely suffice.
I paired it with the black turtleneck to create a look that promotes executive presence but is this functional and fun loving look. Finally, the sneakers with a suit look has been on the rise for years. The shoes were designed by one of the mid-major designers and generally, they speak for themselves. Leather upper, white rubber sole, casual yet classy!
I’m all about getting the most out of your looks and with these pieces you can out-dress everyone on a casual Friday, run right to your happy hour and then hit the town in style without your feet hurting. Any outfit that can take me through multiple venues in my day with a modification is one that I put into rotation often!
How would you rock your turtleneck?
To a Life Worth living,
