Gianni Orisawayi the Founder/CEO of OLURI Fragrances is soon to be a household name. The man behind the vision has been intentional about curating fragrances that are not distinguished by their names but by their captivating aromas. His passion for fragrances started when he was 10 years old and at the peak of his interest made the decision to pursue this industry with every fiber of his being. Since setting out on this journey back in 2011 he has invested countless hours to research in an effort to perfect his craft. “Its taken the patience of Job, but its that which makes the journey much better for me.”
The Interview:
I know that fragrances have always been a passion of yours, how did you identify your passion?
When I was 10, my mom bought me my first bottle of cologne and she always loved perfume. Growing up, I would ask her what she wanted for her birthday, Mother’s Day, etc and it would be perfume. Thus, began the love of fragrances for me.
Choosing a name for your brand is a very strategic undertaking how did you decide on OLURI, and what does it mean?
I spent roughly 2 months or so thinking of my name. When it comes to fragrance/designer brands, the names are typically unique. The name is essentially a combination of my middle and last name (thankfully I have unique names). OLURI means “Put God into everything”.
Who is your greatest inspiration in the fragrance world and why?
I would have to say it is between Tom Ford and Carolina Herrera. Both makers consistently produce exquisite, unique scents.
This is a more technical question, but can you tell me about the process for creating a fragrance?
The process of creating a fragrance is quite extensive. The simple version is you start by having different samples created and then once you choose the one(s) that you want, you send them in for mass production.
I would imagine that you went through several iterations of test fragrances before you were able to generate the perfect scent, how many iterations did you go through? How did that make you feel?
I had roughly 8 variations created and because I find the beauty in every scent, choosing the two I felt fit my target demographic was an amazing feeling.
When you pitch OLURI what is the top question you are asked? How do you respond?
The top question I’m asked is what made you get into fragrances and I tell them story of how my mom’s love of perfume gave me the passion.
What is your vision for OLURI long term?
My goal is to expand internationally, have multiple stores of my own, and have my fragrances in department/bespoke stores.
What do you wish you had known before you got in the fragrance game?
To be honest, nothing. I’ve enjoyed taking time to research and grow through the journey. It makes my passion that much more worthwhile.
In your wildest dreams, who would you like to work with?
I would like to work with someone who shares a similar journey as me. Someone whose passion and story are like mine.
What’s been the biggest hurdle for you in building your brand?
I’d say the biggest hurdle has been that I am only selling online.
I recognize that your business is primarily conducted in the digital space, what do you see as the costs and benefits of this model?
I am saving more overhead cost, but I am also lacking at a bigger following because it’s only sold online.
If there were one contact that you could make today to elevate your brand who would that be and what is the benefit?
I would say Tom Ford because I’ve read the story of how his brand was established and how he produced unique scents as well as differentiated his company
Overall, Gianni is a mogul in the making and I an here for his excellence!
As Always,
Cheers to a Life Worth Living!
